DocType Definition List
A DTD is the formal definition of the elements, structures, and rules for marking up a given type of SGML document.
HTML 4.01
This DocType defines HTML 4.01, which is a subversion of HTML 4. In addition to the text, multimedia, and hyperlink features of the previous versions of HTML, HTML 4 supports more multimedia options, scripting languages, style sheets, better printing facilities, and documents that are more accessible to users with disabilities.- Strict

XHTML 1.0
A reformulation of HTML 4 as an XML 1.0 application, and three DTD's corresponding to the ones defined by HTML 4. These semantics provide the foundation for future extensibility of XHTML.- Strict:

XHTML 1.1
The purpose of this document type is to serve as the basis for future extended XHTML 'family' document types, and to provide a consistent, forward-looking document type cleanly separated from the deprecated, legacy functionality of HTML 4 that was brought forward into the XHTML 1.0 document types.
